What is Astrophotography?

 

Astrophotography is a specialized type of photography that entails recording images of astronomical objects and large areas of the night sky.

 

Photographs can be taken using various methods:

  • Afocal astrophotography is done by holding a camera with a lens up to a telescope and eyepiece and taking a picture…
  • Prime astrophotography is done by directly attaching a camera to a telescope (the telescope becomes the lens)…
  • Wide-field astrophotography is done by using a camera with a lens…

 

Common equipment used in astrophotography (besides a camera, lens, and telescope) include:

  • Mount or tripod to hold the telescope/camera… I use an equatorial mount that has a motor so that it turns as the earth rotates which helps ensure that the pictures are not blurred…
  • Eyepieces attach to the telescope so that you can view the moon, planets, nebula, constellations, and stars…
  • Filters attach to the camera or eyepieces to enhance or alter the image…
